028 Mixed-Use Development

Rügen, Germany

The project introduces a series of pitched-roof volumes in Putbus, mediating between historic fabric and contemporary use while framing shared courtyards.

Set in Putbus on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, the intervention responds to the town’s neoclassical architecture and urban scale. It consists of a series of white pitched-roof volumes that, together with the existing hotel, frame two green courtyards. The new structures follow the rhythm and proportions of the surrounding roofs, mediating between the two-storey scale of Alleestrasse and the larger volume of the hotel. In this way, the extension grows alongside the existing buildings, respecting the historic context while reinterpreting it through a contemporary architectural language.

The façade is designed as an exoskeleton inspired by an enlarged reinterpretation of the hotel’s mullioned windows, allowing generous daylight and internal flexibility. A system of vertical lamellas and loggias of varying widths provides privacy while creating individual outdoor spaces. The buildings are carefully oriented to secure views toward the Schlosspark, with visual connections extending to the Baltic Sea on the horizon.
